Deep River

Catherine S. “Kay” Budney, age 92, a lifelong resident of Deep River, passed away on Nov. 15 at the Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. She was the beloved wife of the late Victor J. Budney, who passed away on March 10, 2011. Kay was born in Deep River on March 22, 1925, the daughter of John J. and Antonina (Brose) Stopa.

Kay was employed for more than 20 years at Whelen Engineering in Chester and also enjoyed working in the cafeteria at Deep River Elementary School. She was a communicant at Saint Joseph Church in Chester. Kay and Victor were married there on June 21, 1947. Kay was an avid card player and also loved spending time in her flower gardens and caring for the many songbirds who visited her yard.

She is survived by her son James Budney and his wife Betsy of Deep River; her daughter Marcia Hartigan and her husband Randy of Orlando, Florida; her grandson Steven Budney, of Deep River; and her great-grandson Chase. Besides her beloved husband Victor and her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters Sophie T. Stopa , Genieva “Jean” Stopa, and Mary F. “Frannie” Stopa, and her brother William and his wife Theresa (Vitali) Stopa. Kay also leaves her many friends and neighbors who meant so much to her.

A graveside service was held on Nov. 20 in the Resurrection Cemetery, Route 145 in Westbrook.
