Branford

John Alfred Hess, Jr., 90, of Branford passed away peacefully on Oct. 31. Born in Meriden to John and Catherine Hess, he grew up in Shelton before residing in Branford for 60 years with his loving wife Joan.

John was a World War II veteran with service in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Macon. John was a gentle man who enjoyed family time and automobiles. He worked for 44 years with Cooley and McDermott Chevrolet dealerships in New Haven. In his spare time he enjoyed hiking and working on cars.

John was extremely caring and proud of his three children, Kathleen Hoyt (David) of Fallston, Maryland, Elizabeth Bruenn (Sean) of Navarre, Florida, and John Hess III (Suzanne) of Guilford. He is also survived by his brother Charles Hess of Gainesville, Georgia, and sister Ellen Hess of Branford; his nine adoring grandchildren, Virginia, Leslie, and Emily Hoyt, Sean and Kyle Bruenn, and Ashley, John IV, Lauren, and Justin Hess; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family received friends on Nov. 4 at W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 N. Main St., Branford, prior to a joint Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary Church, Branford. Burial, with military honors, followed in St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford.
