Jaffrey, New Hampshire

Stephen Miller Bailey, a resident of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on Sept. 21 at the age of 87.

Steve and his twin sister Rowena Robb (Ballas) were born Nov. 18, 1929, in Los Angeles, California, to Dr. Egbert James Bailey and Laura Miller Bailey. Living most of his early life in Rowayton and Darien, he attended St. Luke’s School for Boys, graduating in 1948. He graduated from Brown University with degrees in political science and fine arts and graduated from Drexel University with a degree in library science. He worked for the City of New York for many years, later moving to Clinton to care for his mother until her death in 1988. He then moved to Jaffrey, New Hampshire, to be near his friend Carol Naas. His final years were spent in the generous and kind care of the many employees of the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center.

Gentle, witty, and kind, Steve was always quick to insert a clever play on words when you least expected it. His brilliant smile and laughter will be missed by many.

He is survived by his twin sister Rowena Robb Ballas of Malta, New York, his dear friend and caregiver Carol Naas of Jaffrey, his nephew Christopher Corby Lewis, niece Laura Meeker Lewis, numerous cousins, and several grandnephews and a grandniece. He is predeceased by his father Dr. Egbert James Bailey and his mother Laura Miller Bailey.

A private family memorial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Kitty Rescue and Adoption, PO Box 468, Jaffrey, NH 03452, (Kittyrescueandadoption.org), or to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, 3 Columbus Circle, 15th Fl., New York, NY 10019 (Cerebralpalsyfoundation.org).
