Branford

Calvin passed away peacefully at home at the age of 79 on Oct. 9. He was born April 23, 1938. Cal lived a joyous, adventurous, full life. He was not a man to ever sit still and filled every minute of his day doing the things he loved most. Cal is survived by his loving wife Teresa Ohidy of Branford; they just celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary.

Cal is survived by his children Richard (Kristine) Ohidy and Sean (Gena) Ohidy, both of Plainville, Kelly (John) Galdenzi of Branford, Kati (Joe) Papoosha of Deep River, and Scott Papoosha of Deep River; and his buddy “Captain Jack,” his Maine Coon cat. He is also survived by grandchildren Breannah, Connor, Sean, Kylie, Maddie, Ellie, Brennan, and Quinn; and great-grandchildren Alana and Emilie. He also leaves his sister Norma Cramer of Branford. Cal leaves behind a very large, extended family here in the States and in Ireland/Canada, with many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Cal dedicated his life to his family and his community, from coaching his children’s sports teams through the years, to rooting on every game for his children and grandchildren. He worked for 38 Years for Chesebrough-Ponds/Unilever in the IT Department, from which he retired in 1998. Since 1987, he volunteered at the Branford Fire Department, where he was a firefighter/EMT, served as captain on Rescue 1, and lieutenant on Truck 1. He also worked for Branford, Madison, and Middlesex Ambulance Services for many years. Cal had an honorable discharge from the United States Army.

He was a member of the Indian Neck Yacht Club since 1979 and an avid sailor since age 6 when his dad bought him his first boat. His true passion was being on the water and he instilled that into his family as well. He would pack up the family every weekend in the summer and sail all over from Long Island Sound to Block Island. He also served as the Branford Harbor Master from 2004 to 2011. Cal also drove livery in his spare time for Hy’s, Clancy Funeral Home in Branford, and the Senior Center in Branford. Cal loved to sing, especially his favorite Irish music; there was never a get together without his singing. Cal was a past member of the Sailing Masters and Stony Creek Fife and Drum Corps; he loved getting dressed up in the uniform, marching, playing music, and in the later years, being a part of the Color-Guard. Cal and Teresa loved to travel together and took many trips every year around the world. His favorite destination was Ireland, especially County Clare, where his lovely wife originates from. His spirit and energy will be greatly missed by everyone.

Friends called Oct. 11 at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 N. Main St., Branford. Funeral services were held on Oct. 12 in the funeral home. Burial was private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Branford Fire Department, 45 N. Main St., Branford, CT 06405. Please see his online memorial at www.wsclancy.com.
