North Guilford

Sr. Laura Louise Payton, 92, a Dominican nun at our Lady of Grace Monastery in North Guilford, died there on June 8 after a brief illness. The daughter of the late Henry James Payton and Catherine Agnes Hundley, she was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 21, 1925.

She attended the public schools in Philadelphia. After graduation, Sr. Laura worked in the design division of Franklin Arsenal until 1945, when she entered the Perpetual Rosary Monastery in Camden, New Jersey. She made First Profession in 1947, and Solemn Profession in 1950. In 1989, Sr. Laura transfiliated to the Monastery of Our Lady of Grace. During her seventy-two years of religious life, sister served her communities as cook, with art work, in gardening, as infirmarian, and in the procure, as seamstress, and prioress.

Sister is survived by her nieces Carol Brandon and Patricia Wright; her nephew Richard Payton; grandnieces Samantha and Heather; and grandnephew Raymond. Sr. Laura was predeceased by her brothers Harry, William, and Joseph, and her sisters Agatha, Catherine, and her beloved niece Frances.

The Funeral Mass took place in the Chapel of Our Lady of Grace, North Guilford, on June 12, followed by burial in the monastery cemetery. The Guilford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
