Branford

Jean C. VanSickles, age 92, passed into her Lord’s care and presence on June 12. Jean was the beloved wife of the late Theodore Franklin VanSickles. She was born on Aug. 8, 1924, to the late Ernest Almerion Cooper and the late Lila Wetmore Cooper in New Haven.

Jean grew up in New Haven, attended Woodward School, Fairhaven Junior High School, Grand Avenue High School, and Hillhouse. She was certified as a phlebotomist at Larson Junior College on Whitney Avenue in Hamden (now part of Quinnipiac), and was one of the alumnae in the first class in that discipline to graduate from Larson. She served in the medical field until her retirement.

After Theodore’s passing in 1985, Jean joined the DAR and became a very active and supporting member. She served in the Mary Clap Wooster Chapter as secretary, and three consecutive terms as regent. As regent she went to the national convention every year and served as an official delegate twice. She was a member of the Connecticut State Regent’s Club and served in that group as chaplain and as a counselor for three years. Upon completing her service with DAR, she was elected Honorary Regent for Life.

Jean was a kind and generous woman, always ready to listen and to help. She is survived by her son Charles Swift and his wife Maria; by her grandchildren Daniel and Mike and his wife Leah; and by her great-grandchild Emelia.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate Jean’s life on Monday, June 19 at Hawley Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 1315 Boston Post Rd., Guilford. Friends and family will be welcome to join us there. To sign the online guestbook, please visit hawleylincolnmemorial.com.
