Stony Creek

Beverly Sladon Zimmerman, a longtime resident of Stony Creek, passed away peacefully in Connecticut Hospice on March 11. She was the wife of Dr. Marvin P. Zimmerman. She was born April 29, 1930, in the Bronx, New York, the daughter of Sara and Ruben Sladon. She is survived by her husband and three children, John, William, and Amelia; and her sister Charlotte Smith of Madison. She also has six grandchildren, Christopher, James, Sara, Julia, Samuel, and Devin.

She attended elementary through high school in the Bronx. She attended Hunter College and received a B.A. in education and art. She taught elementary grades in Harlem and Williamsburg, New York; she also taught in Laredo, Texas, when her husband was stationed there in the Air Force in the 1950’s. They then lived first in New York and then in New Haven, while Dr. Zimmerman was doing his medical residency. They moved to Stony Creek in 1959, and lived there ever since. Beverly loved Stony Creek and fiercely worked to keep it the wonderful place it is. A resident once claimed that she chained herself to a tree that he wanted to cut down.

She was involved in creating the Branford Community Theater and the Post Road Players, where she performed and stage managed for many years. In 1972 she, in partnership with Dorothy Fink, opened Zimmerman & Fink on the Guilford green, a store thats mission was “good design with good function.” It was the first of this type in Connecticut. It was enormously successful and remained in business for 21 years.

She served on the board of the Friends of the Willoughby Wallace Memorial Library and was involved with the art exhibits there. She also served on the board of the International Center of New Haven, where she was president for two terms. She was a charter member with her husband of the Long Wharf Theater, and also supported the Yale Repertory Theater and Hartford Stage. All during their lives they enjoyed travel to many places around the world.
