Carole Jane Deuss Shukis, 77, of North Haven passed away peacefully on March 1 at the Yale-New Haven Hospital with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Joseph William Shukis, Jr. Carole was born in New Haven on Feb. 26, 1940, daughter of the late John F. and Mary E. Cook Deuss.

She was a medical assistant for more than 30 years, 12 of which were at Yale Health Plan. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crocheting.

She was the aunt of Larry and Billy Valintas, Karen Doonan, Mary-Nelle Burgh, Karen Porto, and Christine Smith. She was also loved by many cousins. She was predeceased by her brother John Deuss.

Her funeral procession left the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., March 6. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Interment followed in All Saints Cemetery. The visiting hours were held March 5. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Closer to Free Fund, P.O.
