East Haven

Edward “Ted” F. Hotchkiss, 95, of East Haven passed away Feb. 8 surrounded by his family at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was born March 3, 1921, in New Haven to Joseph and Rose (Bannon) Hotchkiss.

Edward is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Elizabeth “Betty” (Hauser) Hotchkiss, and two daughters, Pam Moran of Falmouth, Massachusetts, and Debbie Callan (Michael) of Hamden. Edward is also survived by four grandchildren, Ryan Moran (Paula), Sarah Callan, Jaime Callan, and Shannon Callan; three great-grandchildren, Slade Moran, Lucien Moran, and Genesis Moran; and several nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George “Bud” Hotchkiss, and sister Rosemary Walsh.

Edward grew up in New Haven. He joined the Army at the age of 20 and spent 32 months in the China Burma India Theater of operations during World War II. He left the Army Air Corps but re-enlisted in the Air Force in 1949 and served stateside during the Korean War. He met the love of his life in Momauguin, East Haven, and was married on Dec. 27, 1950. He left the military in 1953 as a staff sergeant after 11 years of total service, to raise a family, and went to work for Western Electric. For his military service he received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, and later joined the East Haven American Legion Post 89.

In 1962 he and his wife bought their current home in East Haven. He retired from Western Electric in 1983 and he and his wife enjoyed going on vacations and Veteran China Burma India conventions in their early retirement years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, joking, and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.

Their family and wonderful neighbors have played an important role in allowing them to remain in and enjoy their home in their advanced years. A special thank you to all those generous, caring neighbors who have kept a watchful eye on them, cooked for them, and visited them. The family is so grateful for your kindness. The family would also like to thank the staff of Yale-New Haven Hospital for their compassion and the wonderful care they gave Edward.

The family received friends Feb. 12 at the Clancy-Palumbo (Clancy Funeral Home), 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven. The funeral procession left Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home on Feb. 13 for a Mass of Christian burial in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Taylor Ave., East Haven, followed by Committal and full Military Honors at All Saints Cemetery in North Haven.
