Essex

Philip Edward Currie, 52, died Feb. 7 surrounded by his family.

Phil was a graduate of Perrysburg High School class of 1983 in Perrysburg, Ohio, and earned a bachelor’s degree in product design from Bowling Green State University. A man of many talents, he had a broad career in product development, operations, and maintenance. Phil complemented all this work with numerous home construction projects and was the go-to guy on home improvements.

Phil’s love of adventure started in his youth with family vacations such as a trip to Tobermory in Ontario, Canada, where he jumped off a 50 ft. cliff into the icy Georgian Bay. This same spirit of adventure led to a move to Seattle, Washington, in 1991. Whether it was a hike up Mt. Rainier, camping in the Cascade Mountains, or roaming through the Olympic Peninsula rain forest, Phil was in his element in the great outdoors.

In 2001, the opportunity for a new adventure on the East Coast led him to eventually settle in Essex. His biggest joy in life was his sons, Nick and Chris. Phil’s fun, playful spirit and creativity were always evident in everything he did with his boys.

Phil is survived by his wife Beth; his two sons Nicholas and Christopher; his parents Richard and Doris; sister Linda (Greg); brother Jeff (Liz); and his nieces and nephews Amelia, Cameron, Evan, Eric, Alex, and Lucia. His friendly smile will be missed by all who knew him.

Services were held on Feb. 11 at the First Congregational Church, 6 Methodist Hill, Essex. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Essex Land Trust at essexlandtrust.org, or to the Currie Education Fund, c/o Essex Saving Bank, 35 Plains Rd., Essex, CT 06426.
