John Joseph McGowan, 95, of Clinton, died peacefully on Feb. 5 in hospice care at Middlesex Hospital. He was born Oct. 28, 1921, in New Haven to the late John and Elizabeth O’Gara McGowan.

Jack, also known as JJ, served honorably in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater of Operations, and again from 1951 to 1952 in the Korean War. He was a member of the New Haven Police Department for 22 years, retiring in 1973 as a detective sergeant. During his time in the department, he was the recipient of two Medal of Honor Awards and many Certificates of Commendation for distinguished service. Jack retired from the US Postal Inspection Service in 1989.

He is survived by his children Tara Boyce and her husband Timothy of Tryon, North Carolina; Kelly McGowan and his wife Leigh of Guilford; Margaret and David Wright of Clinton; Brian McGowan and his wife JoAnn of Guilford; and John McGowan and his fiancee Lisa Pascarella of Colts Neck, New Jersey. Jack is also survived by his grandchildren Owen and Patrick Boyce, Heather and Amanda McGowan, Elizabeth and Eric Wright, Michael, Brianna, and John McGowan, and Nicholas and Garrett McGowan. In addition, Jack is survived by three great-grandsons, Timothy Michael Boyce, John Finnegan Boyce, and Charlie McGowan Wright. Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Jean; by his sister Margaret Saars; and by his granddaughter Samantha Anne McGowan.

Visiting hours will be held Feb. 11 at the Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St., Clinton, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., with a service at Swan Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Jack’s favorite color was red, so please consider wearing something red in his memory. Following the service, interment will be at All Saints Cemetery, 700 Middletown Ave. in North Haven. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s memory may be made to the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department, 35 E. Main St., Clinton, CT 06413.
