East Haven

Kathleen M. VanDerMaelen, 64, of East Haven passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 6 at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Born on Aug. 2, 1952, to the late Gustave P., Jr., and Marianne T. (Mancini) VanDerMaelen, “Kathy,” the first of six children, was a lifelong resident of Foxon.

Preceded in death by her sister Maureen L. VanDerMaelen, Kathy is survived by her four siblings Eileen A. VanDerMaelen of East Haven, Gustave P. VanDerMaelen III of East Haven, Joan L. Roberts of Leland, North Carolina, and Christine A. (Mark) Machala of Nipomo, California. She also leaves behind four aunts, Phyllis (Walter) Kaercher of North Haven, Catherine Mancini of East Haven, Barbara VanDerMaelen of Guilford, and Joan Nagle of Mexico.

A special joy, her nieces and nephews include Jeffrey (Amber) VanDerMaelen, Christopher (Jessica) and Cameron "Max" Roberts, and Matthew and Grace Machala. Her beloved great-nieces and -nephews include Hailey and Riley VanDerMaelen and Enya and Axton Roberts.

Kathy had a 30-year career as a registered nurse at Yale-New Haven Hospital. She had an even longer career as an adored big sister, companion, and aunt. Forever in our hearts, she will be remembered for her devoted care of others.  Kathy leaves us with the precious gift of so many loving memories.

Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, 10:00 a.m., with a reception immediately following at United Methodist Church, Branford, 811 E. Main St. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the United Methodist Church, Branford.
