James J. Mahoney, 82, of Madison died Jan. 26 at Water’s Edge Rehabilitation Center in Middletown. He was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to the late James and Margaret (Sullivan) Mahoney, and was the beloved husband of Joni Mahoney (O’Donnell) and the late Frances Mahoney (Whelan).

He was the loving father of Kelly Fujitani and her husband Peter of Cos Cob; Max Mahoney and his wife Lisa of Arlington, Massachusetts; and Sally Smart and her husband Perry of Middletown. He was the cherished grandfather, “Pa,” of Molly, Sean, and Michelle Mahoney; and Mackenzie, Dillon, and Griffen Smart. He is also survived by his devoted sister Margaret Killilea and her husband Thomas of Belmont, Massachusetts, and many adoring nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Edward Mahoney.

Jim is also survived by Joni’s loving family, his stepchildren Joseph and Amy O’Donnell of Clinton, Kerry and Brian Kenney of Hingham, Massachusetts, Gail and Ned Bermingham of Amherst, New Hampshire, and Matthew and Margaret O’Donnell of Wilton; and eleven grandchildren, Owen, Maggie, Patrick, and Molly O’Donnell, Will and Matt Kenney, Kate and Annie Bermingham, and Ashley, Grayson, and Sadie O’Donnell.

Jim grew up in Brighton, Massachusetts, and graduated from Boston College in 1959 on the G.I. Bill after two years of service in the Army. He went on to work in marketing for Amoco Oil for 35 years. An avid golfer and former captain of the Boston College golf team, Jim made friends wherever he went, especially on the golf course where he was known for his good humor and mischievous antics. Jim was a member of St. Margaret’s Church, where he was blessed to meet Joni after losing his wife Fran after 50 years of marriage.

Relatives and friends were invited to calling hours Jan. 30 at the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Rd., Madison. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 31 at St. Margaret Catholic Church, Madison. Committal followed at West Cemetery.
