Chester

Charles F. Greeney, 92, of Chester died peacefully on Jan. 16 after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Lena (Zaraschi) Greeney; he was predeceased by his son Paul.

He grew up in Deep River and after serving his country during World War II, moved to Chester in the 1940’s to raise his family. Charles was a postman for many years in town and was a member and lifetime engineer for the Chester Hose Company. He was loved by many and was affectionately known by others in the community as “Pops.” An avid card player, he enjoyed winning at cribbage and pinochle. A true family man, he loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up.

Charles leaves behind his children Merry Berdensey and her late husband Arthur; Susan Blackwell and her husband Mark; Charlene Sprayberry and her husband Robert; Linda Johnson; and Charles Greeney, Jr., and his wife Cheryl. He also leaves many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss him dearly.

The family would like to thank the staff of Chesterfields for their kindness and compassion.

Visitation will be held at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St. in Centerbrook, on Jan. 19 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the United Church of Chester, 29 West Main St. in Chester, on Jan. 20 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow with the rendering of Full Military Honors in the Fountain Hill Cemetery, 57 High St. in Deep River.
