Jean Erna Sweet, 88, of Madison died on Dec. 23. She was the widow of Edgar B. Sweet, Jr. She was born on Dec. 14, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Ernest and Dorothy Sangree.

Jean graduated from Branford High School in 1947, and worked at C.R. Gibson in Madison and Guilford. Over the years she was very active within various volunteer organizations. She belonged to the Madison VFW Auxiliary; presided over a number of NCO Wives Clubs during her husband’s time in the military; and lent her support to both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Mrs. Sweet is survived by her brother Ernest Sangree; and her children Paul Sweet and his wife Jill of Madison, Steve Sweet and his wife Priscilla of Groton, Ed Sweet and his wife Diane of Foxboro, Massachusetts, Tom Sweet and his wife Alice of San Antonio, Texas, and Claudia Young and her husband Terry of Salisbury, North Carolina. She is also survived by grandchildren Tom, Christopher, Matthew, Steven, Timothy, Brandon, Noah, and Ella; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sisters Holly and Pat.

Calling hours will be held on Dec. 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Rd., Madison. A funeral service will be held on Dec. 29 at noon in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 232 Durham Rd., Madison. Burial will follow in the Connecticut Veterans Cemetery, Middletown.
