Augusta Hock Allen entered into rest peacefully with her family standing by on June 28 at Masonicare in Wallingford. She was born on July 9, 1927, in New Haven, the daughter of the late August William Hock and Hazel Tuttle Hock. She was predeceased by her brother Vernon.

She attended New Haven schools and graduated from Hillhouse High in 1945. On Nov. 20, 1948, after a four-year courtship, she was married to her high school sweetheart, Donald F. Allen, in Berkley Chapel, New Haven, by the Rev. Robert C. Dentan. They took up residence at their new home on Beverly Drive in North Haven, where they lived for the next 50 years. They moved to Ashlar Village in Wallingford in 1998.

She leaves her husband Donald; her son Donald F. Allen, Jr. and his wife Karen of North Haven; her daughter Claudia and her husband John Muehlfeld of North Haven; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She also leaves a brother, William Hock (Mary) of Austin, Texas; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Augusta was a volunteer librarian at Montowese School; the den mother of Cub Scout Pack 8; and the leader of Girl Scout Troop 8. She was a member of St. John’s Church, where she taught several grades in Sunday school and sang alto for years in the church choir; a member of the Women’s Auxiliary; and started the library at St. John’s Church. She was a longtime volunteer visitor at the Masonic Home in Wallingford. She was a member of the Yale Art Gallery Associates and attended and supported the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and the Woolsey Hall Concert Series. Augusta was interested in the theatre and supported and attended all the performances at Long Wharf Theatre, the Shubert, Goodspeed Opera House, and the Saturday performances at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. She was a staunch fan of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and saw most of them several times.

After their children graduated from college, she and her husband took off to see the world, taking trips to Spain, Portugal, London, Paris, and Rome, and Scotland, Italy, Egypt, and Israel. They also cruised the Rhine. But most of her travels were to England and Wales, where she and her husband spent three months visiting all of the cathedrals and most of the Great Houses and castles. She spent 50 summers at the family cottage at Lanphier’s Cove in Branford and was a member of the Lanphier’s Cove Association. Augusta always had a sparkle in her eyes and a good sense of humor, and always believed that small kindnesses go a long way.

Her funeral procession will leave the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., July 2 at 9:00 a.m. A funeral service will be conducted in St. John’s Episcopal Church at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Beaverdale Memorial Park.
