Anne Elizabeth (White) Sweet, 94, Old Saybrook

Anne Elizabeth (White) Sweet passed away peacefully with family at her side on April 7 at Middlesex Memorial Hospital. Born on September 17, 1920, to parents Harold W. and Irene Clevenshire (Cone) White of Old Saybrook, Anne graduated from Old Saybrook High School in 1938 and continued on to the House in the Pines Finishing School (1938-1939). She went on to marry Brooks R. Sweet on May 3, 1941. They were married at home in Old Saybrook by Brooks’s father Henry Earl Sweet. Together they had two children: a son Jay Brooks Sweet and a daughter Jo A. (Sweet) Mather, whom they raised in Lyme. Anne lived happily in Essex for many years and was currently a resident of Tide Lawn Manor in Westbrook.

Anne had a passion for the historical area of Old Saybrook in which she grew up; her family ties to the Old Saybrook Fort area and its Indian history were documented and researched by her throughout her life. She was a long-standing member of the Old Saybrook Historical Society. From childhood on, Anne collected and saved bits and pieces of historical information that she archived in binders to the delight of her friends at the Mashantucket Museum, where she was honored by having this information recorded for their library under her name. Anne’s unique compilation of Indian lore and facts became priceless information for the museum and is now in their archives. Her ties with the Mashantucket Pequot Museum project was her pride and joy. She was a charter member of the Museum as it was founded and had attended many seminars on local Indian history. Her thirst for knowledge and the written word were never-ending. Brought up in a well-read and educated family, her passion for local history was her driving force. She was also an accomplished artist and wrote many poems, among them many quips called her doggerel for family and friends. She co-wrote with her friend Bobby Booth the book pertaining to the Old Saybrook Fort, which was an Old Saybrook Historical Society undertaking.

Anne leaves two children, 11 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren whom she adored and spent many happy times with.

Her best friend and sister, Jane Marie (White) James predeceased her two years to the day on April 7, 2012.

A memorial service will be held on May 4 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Christ in Old Saybrook. Following the service, everyone is invited to join the family next door at the William Hart House. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Stevenson Archives, 350 Main St., Old Saybrook, CT 06475.
