Lt. James P. Landers, 65, EHPD (Ret.), East Haven


James Patrick Landers, 65, retired East Haven Police Lieutenant, died peacefully at home on April 27. He was the beloved husband of 43 years to Carole Nicoll Landers. Lt. Landers was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, on Nov. 2, 1946, son of the late James R. and Alice McNealy Landers. A 1964 graduate of Wakefield High School, Wakefield, Massachusetts, he graduated from UCONN in 1968 with a BA degree in political science. He was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army ROTC and served in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. He was in the military police and was discharged as a first lieutenant.

Lt. Landers attended police science classes at the University of Bridgeport and the University of New Haven and joined the East Haven Police Department in 1972. He served for 31 years before retiring as a lieutenant in 2006. He was respected by his fellow officers for his intelligence and his humor.

Lt. Landers dearly loved his faithful companion Beau, along with the Boston Red Sox, UCONN men’s basketball, and Dunkin Donuts coffee. He also enjoyed reading various newspapers to keep up with current events.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kerry L. Landers, RN, of Boston, Massachusetts; a son, Sean W. Landers, Esq. and his wife Jillian Ruggiero Landers of Orlando, Florida; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Nicoll of Hamden; three nephews, Scott Nicoll and his wife Heather of Meriden, Brian Nicoll and his wife Jennifer of Chandler, Arizona, and Matthew Langan and his wife Amy of Quincy, Massachusetts; as well as an uncle and many aunts and cousins from Georgia and Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Langan.

His funeral procession was held from the Celentano Funeral Home in New Haven on May 4, followed by services with East Haven Police Department honors at the Old Stone Church in East Haven. Burial with military honors took place in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven.
