Joseph L. Luzzi, 72, East Haven


Joseph L. Luzzi, 72, of East Haven, died Feb. 25 in New Haven. He was the beloved husband of Anna Marie "MiMi" Scalia Luzzi. He was born in New Haven on Oct. 15, 1939, son of the late Donato and Mary Balzano Luzzi. Joseph was a graduate of Wilbur Cross High School, class of 1957, where he was captain of the football team and was All State. He then went on to Villanova University, where he was again captain of the football team and was selected as an All American. As his boys grew up, he coached them in Midget Football.

Joseph served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He had been employed as a vice-president of the First New Haven National Bank, then was general manager of Almar's Food Products, and most recently was in sales at Curran Volkswagen in Stratford. Joseph’s family meant everything to him, and he loved all his children and cherished his grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his beloved children, Scott E. Luzzi and his wife Patty of New Haven, Lisa Montesi and her husband Gary of Guilford, Shawn J. Luzzi and his wife Cecilia of New Haven, and Susan E. Love and her husband Steven of Florida. He was the cherished grandfather of Stephano and Franco Luzzi, Christopher and Olivia Montesi, Taylor and Shawn Luzzi, Jr., and Kyle and Kory Love.  He is also survived by a sister, Marie Nelson of Guilford; two sisters-in-law, Ann Luzzi of East Haven and JoAnn Giaimo and her husband John of Durham; two brothers-in-law, Pasquale Troiano of North Branford and Nicholas Scalia and his wife Dorothy of Wallingford; and many dear nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Anna Troiano, and four brothers, John, Dominic, Donato, Jr., and Sante Luzzi.

His funeral procession will leave the Clancy Funeral Home, 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven, on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 10:30 a.m.   A mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of Pompeii Church at 11 a.m., followed by burial with military honors in All Saints Cemetery.
