Milton S. Marcus, 83

Milton S. Marcus, 83, a lifelong resident of Madison, died Jan. 12 at Yale-New Haven Hospital.  He was the son of the late Louis Marcus and Ester (Glinsky) Marcus, who settled in the East River section of Madison in the early 1900s. Family, friends, and clients will remember him as a man of great intellect and dry humor, with a passion for the arts and culture. A violin prodigy, he gave a solo performance at Woolsey Hall in New Haven at the age of eight.  

A 1944 graduate of Daniel Hand High School, he earned a bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, from The American University in Washington, D.C. and a law degree from the University of Miami School of Law.  He also served in World War II in the U.S. Navy Seabees.

Many knew him as an attorney who had practiced in the area for almost 60 years.  He established his law practice at the family home in East River in the early 1950s, then moved his practice to Madison, where he specialized in real estate and estates & trusts.  He also served as Madison town clerk and helped many local non-profit organizations.

He is survived by a sister, Rose Marcus Bond, formerly of Gifford, Washington, now a resident of Guilford; his brother, Albert Marcus of New York City; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Marcus Cooney and her husband Tom Cooney, formerly of Ivoryton; Yetta Marcus Lupone and her husband Silvio Lupone, formerly of Madison; Florence Marcus Schwartz and husband Dr. Ira Schwartz, formerly of Groton;  her brother-in-law, Edwin Bond; and her nephew, Edward Bond.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m., at the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT (203-245-2488). Contributions in his memory may be made to ACT II of Madison, supporting the ABC (A Better Chance) program, or to The Hole in the Wall of Guilford, supporting the ABC program of Guilford.
