James Edward Horan (Jim)
With his loving family at his side, James Edward Horan (Jim) passed peacefully at the age of 87 into eternal rest on Feb. 12. Born in New Haven on June 11, 1932, to the late John J. and Ethel Mary Horan, he was brother to deceased siblings Helen, Jack, Marge, William, and George. He was married for 59 years to his beloved wife Patricia Ann (Neuberger), and was the father to Edward (Pam), Catherine, and Michael (Jen). He was a mentor and coach to beloved grandchildren Nathaniel, Connor, and Joshua Horan, and Madison and Ryan Poulin, and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Jim’s early career started in the US Navy, where he was stationed on various aircraft carriers, including the USS Intrepid. His love of the Navy lasted his lifetime. On his 80th birthday his family took him back to his beloved Intrepid, for a surprise visit. What an awesome memory for all!
With a love for learning, Jim achieved a BS in secondary education from The New Haven State Teachers College (Southern Connecticut State University) and other advanced degrees at Fairfield University. As a veteran, he was the founding member of the Southern Connecticut Veterans Association. He dedicated himself to education. His love of and skill in math led him to his first teaching position, as a math teacher at Bailey Junior High School in West Haven. Kelly Junior High School in Norwich was Jim’s last assignment as the administrative principal.
Jim enjoyed spending time with family, camping, eating pizza, and traveling to the national parks. A devout Catholic, Jim was a parishioner of St. Lawrence Church in Killingworth.
The family wishes to publicly thank the staff members at the Artis House of Branford and The Guilford House for their outstanding care and kindness.
A celebration of life will be scheduled in the future. Donations in his name can be made to an Alzheimer’s research organization of your choice. To share a memory of Jim or send a condolence to his family, please visit www.rwwfh.com.
