Town Announces Hiring of New Finance Director

CLINTON

After four months, Clinton has a new finance director. On April 23, the Town announced it had hired Robert Tait, ending a months-long search.

Following an executive session at its meeting on April 17, the Town Council members unanimously voted to approve the ratification of a contract for a finance director, but no name was announced at the time.

On the morning of April 23, a notice on the town website announced that Tait had been hired. The post said that Tait’s first day will be April 29.

In a statement, interim Town Manager Robert Brown said that, “Mr. Tait has a wealth of municipal finance experience that will serve Clinton well. Bob Tait not only has a great understanding of municipal finance but he is able to convey that information to the Town Council and members of the public.”

Per the post Tait has served in several municipal government roles in Connecticut. He has been a controller in Fairfield, a finance director in Meriden, and most recently was the finance director of Newtown.

As finance director Tait’s duties will entail financial planning, reporting, debt management, internal auditing, grant administration, advising in collective bargaining, and all other financial functions of the town.

Clinton has been without a finance director since December of 2023, when previous finance director Sue Cunningham announced she would be retiring that month. Cunningham had been the finance director since 2019 and, before that, had been the assistant treasurer for a number of years.

Town Council chairperson Carrie Allen also weighed in on the new hire and said she was glad the Town has the position filled as it prepares to interview new town manager candidates.

“We are extremely happy to have found a very experienced finance director. It is particularly important to us at this time when we are on the cusp of interviewing for a new town manager. We are very pleased that Robert will have a chance to get acclimated to our finance department and become familiar with all he needs to know before the new town manager is hired, as they will work very closely together,” Allen said.
