The Town of Guilford has received a commitment from the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) for $6,607,200 to fund the much-needed Falcon Road Project and Seawall Reconstruction.
Since 2019, the Town of Guilford Engineering Department has been working tirelessly toward finding a permanent solution to repair the frequently damaged seawall and road on Falcon Road. After extensive research and outreach to the community, a plan was developed in collaboration with RACE Coastal Engineers and SLR. This plan includes building a new and more resilient wall with an added parapet, in addition to raising the elevation of the road by two feet.
“The Town of Guilford is grateful for the support of this project by the South Central Region Council of Governments and this commitment from the CTDOT,” said First Selectman Matt Hoey. “It has taken years of planning and permitting, but we can finally look forward to completing this important project for the community.”
In addition to this project, the town also coordinated with local utilities to replace a nearly 100-year-old water main within the project's limits and adjacent neighborhood. The road has been reduced to one lane since December 2022 due to damage, making this project even more crucial.
The CTDOT's commitment to fund this project is part of their Local Transportation Capital Improvement Program Application (LOTCIP), which also provided funding for the Nut Plains Road Construction project at just over $3 million. The next step in this process is finalizing plans for CTDOT review and issuance of a Project Authorization Letter before going out to bid.
Town Engineer Janice A. Plaziak, P.E., expressed her excitement about this funding.
"This funding will be used to repair and provide resiliency to a currently and frequently damaged section of roadway in town. It will be a great project to get completed. It has been several years of design, community involvement, and environmental permitting to get to this point,” said Plaziak.
