Earth Day Litter Cleanup Set for Jacobs Beach in Guilford

Press Release from Connecticut Clean Communities

Connecticut Clean Communities, a 100% volunteer-run group that organizes litter cleanups around the state, will come to Guilford’s Jacobs Beach for an Earth Day cleanup on Saturday, April 20.

Cleanup of the 25-acre site near the Guilford Town Marina will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. All cleanup tools will be provided.

“We welcome volunteers from within the Guilford community to help us with this cleanup,” said Linda Knauff, executive director of Connecticut Clean Communities. “And we are grateful to Representative Moira Rader for inviting us into the Guilford community and helping us to organize this event.”

Jacobs Beach is named after Lyman Jacobs, a farmer-turned-boatbuilder and lobsterman who in 1924 purchased the land for his son David, according to a 2015 Guilford Preservation Alliance newsletter. The property was sold to the town in 1949 with an asking price of $2,000. Part of the beach and marina were constructed with a sluice basin and levy to prevent erosion in the 1970s, and Jacobs Beach is still used today to monitor erosion rates as a means of protecting nearby homes and property.

Connecticut Clean Communities focuses on litter cleanups to prevent trash from entering waterways such as rivers and coastline areas, but also to improve the aesthetic attractiveness of Connecticut neighborhoods. Founded in 2023, the group’s volunteers have already retrieved over two tons of trash from area beaches, parks, and roadways.
