CT Route 146 Corridor Project Public Meeting Set for April 23

Residents of Branford and Guilford who want to know more or give their final input on the state’s Corridor Management Plan (CMP) for Route 146 in Branford and Guilford are encouraged to attend an April 23 meeting in Branford with officials from Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT).

DOT officials will be in Branford to discuss State Project No. 0175-1608 on Tuesday, April 23, 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Branford Fire Headquarters, 45 North Main Street. The meeting will be live streamed by BCTV on its YouTube channel at youtube.com/@BranfordTV

CT DOT first announced its intent to plan for the project in 2021, beginning with the Route 146 Existing Conditions Report completed that year. The report identified key environmental, cultural and historic resources along the corridor, including vistas and viewsheds. In early 2023, a Corridor Working Group involving the Towns of Branford and Guilford, local community members, the DOT and other key stakeholders became part of the Corridor Management Plan (CMP) project planning process.

“The purpose of creating a CMP is to review the Route 146 corridor and how to protect its many historical, cultural, and environmental resources. The CMP will balance caring for these important resources with providing a safe roadway for all travelers and respecting the desires of the community, residents, and local businesses. It will also look at ways to make the corridor more resilient—more prepared for climate risks like flooding,” the DOT stated.

Right-of-way impacts associated with this planning project are not anticipated, according to the DOT.

CT Route 146 stretches 13 miles from Route 1 (North Main Street) in Branford to the intersection to Route 1 (Boston Post Road) in Guilford. In 1990, Route 146 was made a State Scenic Road from Eades St. in Branford to the end of the road in Guilford, at Route 1. In 1991, almost all of the route was designated a State Scenic Road. Many places along the road are listed as Designated Historic Resources on State and National Registers.

The DOT said the April 23 meeting has been set with the purpose of providing the community an opportunity to learn about the project and to provide input on the final strategies to be included in the Route 146 CMP and preview the Draft Plan Document.

Previous CMP public information meetings took place in the the spring and fall of 2023. A public survey issued in early 2024 also gathered input. The April 23 meeting will be the third and final public meeting of the process, after which an update will be shared with the Towns of Branford and Guilford, followed by developing and finalizing the CMP later this spring.

A Q & A session will be opened immediately following the DOT presentation on April 23. The DOT is encouraging “...an open discussion of any views and comments concerning the plan development and proposed strategies.”

Persons with hearing and/or speech disabilities may dial 711 for Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS). Language assistance may be requested by contacting CTDOT’s Language Assistance Call Line (860) 594-2109. Requests should be made at least five business days prior to the meeting. Language assistance is provided at no cost to the public and efforts will be made to respond to timely requests for assistance.

Following the April 23 meeting, the public can submit comments and questions during a two-week public comment period ending May 7 to: DOT.Route146@ct.gov and 860-594-2020 or by filling in the feedback form on the project website at https://route146cmp.com/get-involved.html
