Vehicle Operator Dies in Single-Car Accident in East Haven

Press Release from East Haven Police Department

The operator of the vehicle involved in a single-car motor vehicle accident on Forbes Place in East Haven on Feb. 22 has died. The deceased was identified as Wilber Nazario, 47, of Joffre Street in East Haven.

At approximately 12:10 p.m. on Feb. 22, East Haven Police Department (EHPD) Sergeant Shirley Conyers was traveling northbound on Forbes Place while on routine patrol and observed a Toyota Highlander strike a tree in the area of Forbes Place and Sydney Street. It was determined that the sole occupant of the vehicle, Nazario, was traveling southbound on Forbes Place when he passed a mail truck that was also traveling southbound on Forbes Place.

The mail truck, which was stopped with its left turn signal activated, was attempting to turn left on to Sydney Street. The mail truck was not directly involved in the accident and was not struck by Nazario.

In video footage, Nazario can be seen leaving the roadway, driving up onto the sidewalk, and narrowly missing a telephone pole, but his vehicle struck a tree head-on just south of the telephone pole. Once on the scene, Officer Kevin McGuire gained access to the driver’s compartment of the vehicle and began life-saving measures on Nazario while he was extricated from the vehicle by East Haven Fire Department personnel.

Nazario was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he later died.

This incident remains under investigation. Anyone who might have information regarding this investigation is asked to contact investigators at 203-468-3820 or message the EHPD on any of its social media platforms.
