Thomas W. Prete Inducted into National Academy of Engineers


National Recognition for Northford Resident

Thomas Prete of Northford was recently inducted into The National Academy of Engineers (NAE), marking one of the highest professional distinctions that is accorded to any engineer.

Prete was selected through the NAE for engineering leadership in the design, development, and servicing of the world’s most advanced military and commercial jet engines. These include the propulsion systems for USAF front line fighter aircraft such as the F-22 Raptor and the most recent F35 Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter. The NAE has more than 2,000 peer-elected members, along with senior professionals in business, academia, and government who are among the world's most accomplished engineers. They provide leadership and expertise for projects focused on the relationships between engineering, technology, and the quality of life.

Prete has been with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines since 1989, holding various positions of increasing responsibility in engineering over that period of time. His current position is vice president of military engineering.

Prete was also inducted into the UConn Academy of Distinguished Engineers in 2008 and is a member of the school's advisory board, which provides input and advice on issues of importance to the school. Prete is also a recipient of the 2001 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Engineer of the Year Award and the 2003 William G. Chamberlain Award for Outstanding Military Customer Service.

Prete is also heavily engaged in various leadership positions that are focused on helping members of the underrepresented community and the engineering profession through organizations such as CT Stem, United Way, Engineers Without Borders, ASME, and Women Engineering Ambassadors.

Prete received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from UConn in 1985, a master of science in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer at Hartford in 1993, and a master's of business administration from UConn in 2001. Prete resides in Northford with his wife Rose. They have three sons: Thomas, Alexander, and Justin.
