Free Radon Test Kits Available for Branford, North Branford, and East Haven Residents from East Shore District Health Department

Press release from East Shore District Health Department

With January being National Radon Action Month, the East Shore District Health Department (ESDHD) is offering free radon air test kits to residents of Branford, East Haven, and North Branford during the month of January. The free radon test kits are limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States can be attributed to radon. Exposure to radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.

Radon has no color, taste, or odor. It can seep into any type of building, whether brick or frame, new or old, basement or no basement, crawl space or slab on grade. Southern Connecticut is one of the high-radon areas of the United States, as designated by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The free radon test kits will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis from the ESDHD office at 688 East Main Street in Branford from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday in January. The kits were provided by the Connecticut Department of Public Health Radon Program. Supplies are limited, and each household is asked to take no more than one kit.
