North Branford High School Recognizes Top Students

North Branford High School (NHBHS) recognizes the Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Essayist and Class President of the North Branford High School Class of 2023.

Valedictorian Aexander Shadman is a very accomplished senior at NBHS. He is the National Honor Society (NHS) secretary and is taking several challenging courses, including AP Statistics, AP Spanish, UConn/Early College Experience (ECE) American Protest, and AP Psychology. During his junior year and prior, Shadman completed many demanding courses, including AP US History, AP Environmental Science, AP Language and Composition, AP US Government, and several honors-level courses. As a very accomplished musician, he has performed as a first chair alto sax during the Southern Regionals and participated in the UConn Honor Band for high school students. He is a member of the East Haven High School/NBHS Co-Op Marching Band and is a two-time National Champion (2019, 2022). This year, he served as a director and as a drum major for this accomplished group. In addition to his musical endeavors, Shadman has been a member of several school-based clubs, including: Kaleidoscope, Yearbook, and Chess, and has been a leader for the NBIS Spotlight Players. He enjoys performing with the Guilford Town Band and has volunteered at the North Branford Food Pantry. Shadman will be attending Yale University to study music and theater.

Salutatorian Grant Bogardus is a very accomplished senior at NBHS. He is taking several challenging courses, including AP Calculus, AP Statistics, Physics Honors, Italian IV Honors, and UConn/ECE Seminar in Academic Writing. During his junior year and prior, he completed several AP courses, including AP Language/Composition, AP US History, AP US Government, and several honors-level courses. During his junior year, Bogardus completed Wesleyan University coursework as a Wesleyan High School Scholar. He is a NHS member. Borgadus is also an eagle scout. For his eagle scout project, he designed and built an outdoor classroom for a local church. The educational space includes a pergola, planting boxes, picnic tables, and workstations for students. He continues to volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. Grant is a four-year NBHS varsity Ultimate Frisbee team member. He placed second in the Shoreline Writing Competition. Bogardus will be attending Cornell University this fall and plans on majoring in political science with a long-term goal of studying law.

Essayist Anuska Patel is a very accomplished senior at NBHS. She is currently taking several challenging courses including, AP Biology, Calculus, Physics Honors, and Introduction to Psychology. During her junior year and prior, she successfully completed several honors level courses in all disciplines. Patel has taken several science electives including anatomy and physiology, Principles of Biomedical Science and UConn ECE Medical Terminology. She is a member of the NHS. Patel has been a volunteer during several local and regional events including fundraisers held at the St. Vincent DePaul shelter. She has also volunteered during blood drives sponsored by the Red Cross. She will be attending Quinnipiac University this fall and plans on majoring in the Health Sciences as a pathway to becoming a physician's assistant.

Class President Cecelia D’Amico is an accomplished and involved senior at NBHS. She has has taken several challenging honors-level courses, which include AP Biology, AP Statistics, UConn ECE Seminar in Writing, and Human Anatomy. D’Amico is a NHS member, NHS Leadership Team member and Spanish Honor Society member. She was recognized as a junior during the annual CIAC/CAS Banquet for her work in the area of Unified Sports and is a member of several clubs at NBHS including the Global/Diversity Club, Environmental Club, Sign Language Club and Unified Circle. She is an NBHS cheerleading and tennis team member. D’Amico has served as one of two student Board of Education representatives during her senior year. She will be attending Quinnipiac University as a nursing major.
