05/09/2023 01:41 PMThe Town of Guilford’s Safe Streets Task Force is putting on its first-ever Bike Walk Bus Carpool to School event happening Monday, May 15, through Friday, May 19, at each elementary school and middle school. Calvin Leete will kick off the event on Monday, May 15, followed by A.W. Cox on Tuesday, May 16, Lakes on Wednesday, May 17, Baldwin and Jones on Thursday, May 18, and Adams on Friday, May 19. The whole community is supporting this effort, including Guilford Public Schools, Guilford Police Department, Guilford Fire Department, Guilford Public Works, elected officials, and Safe Streets volunteers.
The task force encourages all kids to participate and for their parents to help determine a safe and fun mode of transportation to school that doesn’t involve a single car/single rider. This event highlights eco-friendly modes of transportation, promotes community spirit, and provides a unique and fun experience for each family.
Guilford Safe Streets Task Force member Kimberly Schmid said these events are a great opportunity for parents to consider the available alternatives for getting their children to school.
“The goal of Bike, Walk, Bus, Carpool to School is to raise awareness of the need for walkable, connected communities, which in turn leads to healthier communities for all its residents. Every school in Guilford also doubles as a town center, a place where people gather inside and outside of school hours, so we want to continually improve the walkability and bike-ability around our schools. However, not all families can safely walk or bike to school, and for those families, we have included bussing or carpooling within this event, which are eco-friendly modes of transportation that also promote community,” Schmid said.
