03/20/2023 08:15 AMFollowing a roll-over motor vehicle accident in Hartford and a charge of operating under the influence, Branford Rep. Robin Comey (D, 102) has been suspended until further notice from her House legislative leadership and committee assignments.
Comey is currently in her third consecutive elective term as State Representative. She was involved in an evening motor vehicle roll-over accident on March 16 on Capitol Avenue in Hartford.
In a statement issued early on Friday, March 17, House Speaker Rep. Matt Ritter (D), said Comey was removed from all committee and leadership assignments until further notice.
“This was an extremely dangerous situation and somebody could have been seriously injured, including Rep. Comey,” Ritter stated. “I want to thank Hartford Police for their quick response. My immediate reaction is to think about Rep. Comey’s next steps. I hope she focuses on her health and wellbeing and I know that her friends and colleagues will support her in any way we can. In light of the seriousness of this situation, I am immediately removing Rep. Comey from all committee and leadership assignments until further notice.“
Comey serves as the assistant majority whip and as vice chair of the legislature’s Committee on Children. She is a member of the Education Committee and Human Services Committee.
According the Hartford police arrest report, the incident took place at 389 Capitol Avenue. The report indicates Comey was charged at 7:52 p.m. on March 16 with 14-227a, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
UPDATE: On March 18, Comey issued a statement in which she apologized for the arrest and said she will seek treatment. Comey also shared she was grateful, in advance, “...to everyone for giving me the time and support I need.” See the story here
