Pathfinders Seeking Volunteers for Deer Lake Work Day

KILLINGWORTH

Pathfinders has announced a Lumberjack Work Party day for Saturday,Jan. 21, 2023 at 9 a.m. at the Deer Lake Camp in Killingworth. The event will include a chainsaw safety class, firewood splitting and stacking, and other light-duty jobs. The organization urges those interested to come down and find out what else is going on at the property this year.

Pathfinders Facilities Manager Tom Feiner said the pre-holiday storm will provide plenty of work for anyone wishing to volunteer. Storm-felled trees will have to be cleared from trails, and stocking the camp’s firewood needs for the season is an ongoing chore.

“It’s a big camp, and the amount of wood that we need to supply certain cabins with firewood for heat is always a continual thing we do. Clearing trees from the trailways and, with this storm that will be coming in, it’s likely that’s primarily where we’ll be, out on the trail system clearing trees,” Feiner said.

According to Feiner, Pathfinders is seeking volunteers to assist with not only this event, but to create lasting relationships with residents for future events.

“We want to develop partnerships with volunteers as well. When we have an event we’d like to form a group of people that we can rely on to come and help out,” said Feiner. “We have a hearty bunch of guys who come out, some really great volunteers, but we can always use some help. Even just stacking wood is a huge help to us. We had a really good turnout last time, and we were real happy with everyone who showed up.”

The event will provide a chainsaw safety class for anyone interested in seeking to mitigate the hazards of operating a saw.
