Beef, Pig Roast Fundraiser to Benefit VFW

ESSEX

Livestock of the red meat variety will be the main course for a fundraiser held by the Essex Veteran’s Memorial Hall (EVMH) on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the club.

Admission to the event, which will run from 2 to 6 p.m. is $30 for adults and $20 for children under the age of 12. Hors d’oeuvres will be served first, with the main course of dinner being served at 3 p.m. Tickets for purchase is limited to 120 guests from the public, and are sold at bar area of the EVMH.

Dinner will be the usual barbecue fare, with side dishes to the roast beef and pork servings being macaroni and cheese, baked beans, colesaw, followed by a variety of desserts.

The fundraiser is one of several major of its kind that the EVMH hosts every year for the club, which raised around $3,000 last year in holding the event, according to Art Davies, the president of the club. Davies said the money raised from fundraisers go towards the club’s utilities bills and plans for renovations to the building, which has been an establishment for all Essex veterans since 1946. The club is looking to refurbish its small size kitchen into a larger and more well-functioning one.

“We have that meeting room that we rent out to the public, and renovations will make that more attractive. They’ll have a larger kitchen to use and should be a better deal for us and them,” said Davies.

The EVMH had previously suffered financially in keeping up with its utility bills and with the ability to host fundraisers given the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, finding itself in a deficit exceeding $7,000. This was offset by an approval of $30,000 in funding from the town American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) pool by the Board of Selectmen in June.

“The really helped us out. It gave us some space and a chance to these fundraisers, and have a nice surplus to work off of,” said Davies.

EVMH is looking to hold six more fundraisers this year, including a tag sale.

Live music will be played at the roast as well, lasting throughout the entirety of the dinner.
