Police Warn of Thefts at Gas Stations

Police have issued a warning for drivers stopping at gas stations: remain aware of your surroundings.

North Haven Police posted to the warning to the department’s Facebook page on Aug. 5 after responding to several incidents in which thieves targeted drivers parked at gas pumps.

According to a press release from the Milford Police Department, a pregnant woman had her Volkswagen Atlas stolen while pumping gas at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 5 at a BJ’s gas station, 555 Universal Drive, North Haven. Four juveniles entered her vehicle and drove off, traveling to Milford to commit several additional crimes before being apprehended after crashing the stolen Volkswagen in Orange.

Police in North Haven also noted an elderly woman had her purse stolen while pumping gas, including a video showing how quickly thieves can target unsuspecting victims.

“The victims are not to blame,” the department wrote on its Facebook page. “We encourage everyone, even when near your vehicle, to lock your doors and remain aware of your surroundings.”
