New Britain Teen Killed in Durham Road Accident

A New Britain teenager traveling along Durham Road in Guilford was killed on Aug. 2 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a barn shortly after 3 p.m.

According to Guilford Police, the 16-year-old was travling northbound along the 5000 stretch of Durahm Road at 3:15 p.m. on Aug. 2 when his vehicle crossed the center line and slammed into a barn. The name of the victim was not released, but police officials said the sole occupant was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital where he later was pronounced dead.

Police officials said in a statement that there was significant damage to both the barn and the vehicle. The Regional South Central Connecticut Traffic Unit (RSCCTU) was called in to assist the Guilford Police Department in the investigation, Guilford Chief of Police Butch Hyatt said.

Durham Road was closed for several hours while police investigated the accident.

Hyatt is requesting anyone who may have witnessed the accident contact police as soon as possible. The RSCCRTU was in the area conducting traffic safety interdictions when the accident occurred, according to Hyatt.

“These stops include conversations about why we are doing what we’re doing and why we look to identify those violations, because they are the type of violations that ultimately cause property damage, injuries, and, unfortunately, sometimes fatalities like the one we had yesterday,” Hyatt said.

“The young man unfortunately passed away in this incident. It is truly an awful occurrence. But that’s why we are doing this regional team approach with the Traffic Unit. If there is anybody who may have witnessed any part of this incident should contact us. A lot of times they think if they’ve witnessed something don’t realize how important their info is.”

Anyone with information about this accident is urged to call the Guilford PD at 203-453-8061.
