Coast Guard Band to Play Parmelee Farm July 31

Killingworth

The U.S. Coast Guard Band is coming to Killingworth’s Parmelee Farm on Sunday, July 31 thanks to a collaboartion of the Killingworth and Haddam Lions Clubs. The band will perform in the pavilion and concert-goers are encouraged to come early.

“We have always had a close relationship with the Haddam Lions, and...they were the ones who helped organize this concert and get it launched,” said Killingworth Lions Club President Richard Clare. “This is going to be a great event for the towns.”

The Parmelee Farm is 130-plus acres of preserved farmland and forest with hiking and horse trails that are adjacent to the Cockaponsett State Forest. The band will be performing for the second time at this venue and the Lions welcome all community family and friends from all surrounding towns to enjoy this concert performed by the one and only US Coast Guard Band, according to Clare.

Clare said that the organizations hope to sponsor an annual concert at the farm every year.

“This hasn’t been an ongoing annual event, but we hope that it will be because it has become immensely popular,” Clare said. “Everybody is looking forward to this event, and it will be a great evening. We hope everyone attends. These grounds are such a beautiful place and we hope folks come out early and wander around. This is such a beautiful place. It’s one of those, kind of a Norman Rockwell-type spots, with the band and the families.”

According to the USCG website, the United States Coast Guard Band is the premier band representing the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. The 55-member ensemble has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the nation, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets. Clare also added that patrons can bring their own beverages and food and set up for an evening of free fun.

Additional parking at the adjacent Haddam-Killingworth Middle School will be available. The concert will be held Sunday, July 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Parmelee Farm, 465 Killingworth Road/Route 81.
