Every year, on Martin Luther King Day, the governor orders that the state Liberty Bell in the capitol rotunda be rung at noon to honor the birthday of slain civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968). This year, Old Saybrook 4th-grader Jackson Marcello was among the celebrants. The commission was established in 1986 to ensure that the commemoration of Dr. King’s birthday is meaningful and reflective of the spirit with which he lived and the struggles for which he died.
