North Haven Police have charged a Coventry man with possession of a sawed off shotgun on a warrant stemming from a summer 2017 incident.
According to a press release from the North Haven Police Department, officers were investigating a report of suspicious activity at the Sunoco gas station on Universal Drive during summer 2017. Officers located Branden Ridel, 32, of Coventry, who was walking in and out of the store. The investigation revealed that Ridel had an active arrest warrant issued by the Vernon Police Department, and he was taken into custody. His vehicle was inventoried prior to being towed from the scene.
The inventory of Ridel's vehicle uncovered three firearms. Ridel had a permit to carry firearms but one of the guns was a homemade shotgun with a sawed off barrel. The homemade shotgun was submitted to the State of Connecticut Firearms Unit for evaluation. The gun was found to be illegal, and an arrest warrant was obtained by the North Haven Police Officers.
Coventry Police detained Ridel on Tuesday, Feb. 13. He was transported to North Haven where he was charged with possession of a sawed off shotgun. He is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Feb. 22.
