Goupil Resigns From Town Council

Town Council member Christine Goupil has resigned from her seat on the Council. The Democratic Town Committee (DTC) will nominate a replacement at a future meeting.

On Jan. 26, Goupil sent a letter to Executive Assistant Mary Schettino, Town Clerk Sharon Uricchio, and Town Manager Karl Kilduff in which she announced her resignation effective immediately. Goupil was elected to a four-year seat on the Council in 2019. Her term was set to end in November unless she was re-elected. For the time being, the normally seven-person Town Council will be a six-member board.

In her resignation letter, Goupil wrote, “It has been an honor to serve as the last first selectman and as a town councilman these past three years. I’m grateful for the confidence our community has placed in me.”

DTC Chairman Paul Gebauer said the committee will nominate someone to fill Goupil’s vacant seat at its meeting on Thursday, Feb. 9.

“We want to thank Christine for her years of service to the town on the Town Council as well as during her time as First Selectman and on the Planning and Zoning Commission. We wish her well in all future endeavors,” Gebauer said in a statement.

At a Council meeting on Feb. 1, Town Council Chairman Chris Aniskovich also touched upon Goupil’s resignation.

“Obviously, by now, I’m assuming you all know Christine has resigned from the Council. We thank her for her time and years of service she gave to the Council. And looking forward, obviously, to a new addition to the Council, and that we can continue to work together as a group and continue to move everything forward,” Aniskovich said during the meeting.

Goupil did not respond to a request for comment for this article.
