OSPS Leader Named Superintendent of the Year

Old Saybrook's Public Schools (OSPS) are in good hands, according to the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) and the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents (CAPSS). The organizations announced OSPS Superintendent Jan Perruccio as Superintendent of the Year while recognizing the Board of Education (BOE) for its leadership.

At an awards ceremony in November, CABE and CAPSS named Perruccio the 2022 Superintendent of the Year. In giving her the award, the organizations recognized Perruccio for her work in what was another challenging year for educators.

“This has been a challenging year to be a superintendent and was a year like no other. As such, we present a Connecticut Superintendent of the Year who represents all of us, who carries the banner for all of us. Jan Perruccio will make all of us proud as she exemplifies the work that we do and the role from which we do it”, said Frances Rabinowitz, executive director of CAPSS.

Perruccio has been the superintendent in Old Saybrook since 2013. Before that, she worked in the Wallingford and Old Lyme School systems.

According to a press release from OSPS, Perruccio has worked on two separate strategic plans that aim to improve the level of instruction while providing a safe and fair environment for all.

“Under her leadership Old Saybrook Public Schools also successfully navigated through the COVID-19 pandemic, using the opportunity to set a new technology standard of a one-to-one computer-to-student ratio and update the HVAC units at facilities across the entire District,” the release stated.

“At a regional/state level, Ms. Perruccio serves on, and often leads, several committees and groups, including the Middlesex Shoreline Superintendents Association, the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents Executive Board of Directors, and the Central Connecticut State University Advisory Board,” it continued.

In a statement, Perruccio said, “I am honored and proud to receive this recognition and I accept it on behalf of all superintendents across the State of Connecticut. I know how important the leadership we provide can be to a school district and the students we serve, and I couldn’t be more pleased to represent our role and profession.”

The award for Perruccio wasn’t the only good news for Old Saybrook from the ceremony.

At the same conference, the Old Saybrook Board of Education was recognized with the CABE Leadership Award.

According to a press release on the award, “CABE believes that Boards of Education which exhibit the most effective leadership are characterized by their ability to work together as “teams.” The CABE Board of Education Leadership Awards are designed to recognize boards which work effectively in this manner.”
