A Greeting from the Editor

A strange thing happened to me as I began work on the publication you’re reading right now. I typed my name at the top of this note and, for the first time, a new title followed. In my 13 years at Shore Publishing/Zip06, I’ve had a lot of different titles appear under my name: Community News Editor, Web Manager, Digital Media Manager, and Online and Periodicals Editor. But here’s this new one: Managing Editor. I won’t lie. It’s going to take a minute or five to get used to.

I’ve had the great privilege to be part of the team at Shore Publishing for a little more than a decade, and a lot has changed since my 2009 hiring. Reporters have come and gone, publishers have changed, and the once-fledging Zip06.com is now a force all on its own. One thing that remained constant, however, was the editorial guidance at the top. For two decades, a single editor worked to provide stable, consistent, and thoughtful editorial leadership to establish Shore Publishing’s reputation as a valued and trustworthy news source. And he did it all with a mix of skill, wisdom, and a lot of good humor (or, at least, his brand of humor). As I step into this new role, I’m very much aware and humbled by the giant legacy Brian Boyd leaves behind.

Brian has cautioned me against producing his newspapers and instead urged me to put out my own. The thing is, though, I’ve never once thought of these papers as belonging to anyone other than each of you—our readers.

Week after week, you allow us to tell your stories, putting your faith and trust in us. You deserve reporters and editors who understand and appreciate the importance of what has been laid before them. There are very few jobs where the work can be described as vital and necessary to people’s day-to-day lives, and there are even fewer jobs in which you get to tell the story of the community you live in. Thank you. Each and every one of us at Shore Publishing feels the weight of your trust.

While the task ahead of me looms large, I’m very thankful to be surrounded by an extremely talented and dedicated group. I will stumble along the way, but I’ve got a great team backing me up. I can promise that Shore Publishing will continue to serve you, our readers, in the best way we can. I welcome your feedback, and yes, even your criticism. This is your local paper. I’m just fortunate enough to work here.
