Madison Celebrates Independence Day

After Madison kicks off the holiday weekend on Saturday, July 2 with a concert on the town green, Independence Day celebrations continue throughout the weekend with the annual fireworks display on July 3 and parade on July 4.

Festivities begin on Saturday, July 2 with a pops concert on the Green presented by Madison Cultural Arts (MCA). The annual concert begins with a performance by Moto at 6:15 p.m. and Wallingford Symphony Orchestra (WSO) concert begins at 7 p.m. The concert will include performances of patriotic songs, selections from Broadway musicals and television classics, and more. Admission is free, but those who wish to reserve seats near the stage can become a MCA patron. In the event of inclement weather, a rain date is set for Monday, July 4. Concert-goers are reminded to bring a picnic and chairs, but alcohol is not permitted. For information about becoming a MCA patron, visit madisonculturalarts.org/patrons.

The annual fireworks display is set for Sunday, July 3. The display will be launched from a barge south of the West Wharf pier at 9:30 p.m. and can best be seen from East Wharf, West Wharf, and the Surf Club. Due to the large number of expected attendees, spectators are encouraged to arrive early and to expect traffic delays, road closures, and parking restrictions. Gate hours at the Surf Club, East Wharf, and Lowry will be extended from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to park for the fireworks at these lots will need either a seasonal beach sticker or daily parking pass. Parking at West Wharf will be prohibited starting mid-morning on Friday, July 1 to allow for the set-up of the fireworks.

Fundraising for this year’s display has fallen below goal, according to organizers, and costs have increased more than 20 percent due to supply and inflation. Donations are being collected at madisonfireworks.org.

Closing out the weekend, Madison’s Heritage will be celebrated with the annual July 4 parade. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. from the Stop & Shop parking lot and winds down Boston Post Road to end at the Surf Club. Madison Historical Society, the Deacon John Grave House, and the Charlotte L. Evarts Memorial Archives are expected to participate in the parade along with a delegation from the Evarts Family to lead the parade.
