01/12/2022 11:00 PMOne adult and five juveniles were arrested after a stolen car they were operating was spotted traveling through East Haven after an unsuccessful carjacking attempt in the Town of Guilford.
On Jan. 12, the East Haven Public Safety Dispatch Center received information from the Guilford Police Department that a white Maserati had fled their town via I-95 south after attempting to carjack a vehicle in a driveway in Guilford. Guilford PD further advised dispatch that during the attempted carjacking, the vehicle owner was assaulted after the suspects implied that they had a gun. The robbery was unsuccessful, and six individuals fled the area in the same car they arrived in.
The white 2021 Maserati, which fled Guilford via I-95 south. was spotted by East Haven officers as it passed through East Haven in the area of West Frontage Road. Officers Donato Palma, Anthony Fiorillo, and Anthony Beretta entered I-95 and were able to observe the vehicle from a distance exiting I-95 south and enter I-91 north. The white Maserati then exited I-91 north via exit #2 (Hamilton Street).
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled across Hamilton Street and continued into an industrial storage facility. With nowhere to go, the Maserati struck several cruisers in an attempt to flee and continued on to East Street. The vehicle became disabled after it lost control on East Street, striking a curb and a police cruiser. Six individuals fled from the vehicle. One juvenile, who will not be identified because of his age, was apprehended on East Street by Officer Donato Palma and Officer Anthony Beretta. Another juvenile was taken into custody without incident at the disabled vehicle by Officer Anthony Fiorillo. Detectives Monique Colbert, John Fraenza, and Jon Trinh located two juveniles and one adult, identified as Joel Whitfield, 18, of Wadley Street, New Haven, behind a Dunkin near the intersection of State and Humphrey streets. Officers from the New Haven Police Department located the sixth juvenile in the area of Nash Street. A facsimile firearm was also located within the vehicle.
It was later learned that the 2021 Maserati Quattroporte was stolen out of White Plains New York.
Juvenile 1, who was identified as the driver of the stolen vehicle was charged with first degree larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny, second degree criminal trover, and assault on public safety, interfering with police, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, weapon in a motor vehicle, reckless driving, engaging in pursuit, and operating motor vehicle without a license.
Juveniles 2 through 5 and Whitfield were each were charged with first degree larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny, interfering with police, and weapon in a motor vehicle.
All of the juveniles were given a court date of Jan. 26 at the New Haven Superior Court for Juvenile Matters. They were all released to their parents. Whitfield was held on a $25,000.00 bond and faced a judge on Jan. 13 at G.A. 23, 121 Elm Street New Haven.
