12/01/2021 08:19 AMA holiday tradition returns to the Guilford Green on Friday, Dec. 3 with the Guilford Holiday Tree Lighting headlining a weekend of festive events organized by the town, Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, and local organizations.
Events start early on Dec. 3 starting with the Annual Holiday Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Guilford Free Library, 67 Park Street. The Adams School Camerata Singers will offer live music for shoppers. Next up is the Guilford Garden Club Christmas Boutique from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Saint George Church Hall, 33 Whitfield Street. Shoppers can find natural wreaths, holiday decorations, and table decorations, with proceeds from the sale benefiting the club’s programs, including scholarships and town beautification projects. Things start warming up at 5 p.m. with the 50th annual Chili Supper running from 5 to 7 p.m. on the Christ Episcopal Church driveway, 11 Park Street. The menu includes meat and vegetarian chili, cornbread, and warm cider. Food is served to go. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children; patrons can pay at the door. The Guilford Garden Club is back after its boutique with the Broad Street Walk from 5 to 9 p.m. on Broad Street. Club members decorate the street and walkways with lanterns, fences with pine roping and red bows, and doors with Christmas wreaths. The main event—the treelighting festivities—also kick off at 5 p.m. on Guilford Green. The event traditionally features caroling, performances from local vocal and dance groups, and a visit from Santa.
In addition to the library book sale on Dec. 4, Operation ELF (Embracing Lonely Families) runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nathanael B. Greene Community Center, 32 Church Street, and continues on Sunday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The program is a toys and gift cards drive for active-duty Connecticut National Guard families enduring the hardship of separation due to deployment and is sponsored by the Edward A. Norton VFW Post 7666 in Guilford. For more information, call 203-823-7946.
