11/30/2021 02:01 PMWhether you are new to Guilford, or just want to help welcome those who are, The Guilford Newcomers Club is looking for members. This group had to curtail operations as a result of the pandemic, but is actively seeking new members and is in the process of launching future events for all of Guilford.
This group continues to not only welcome new arrivals to town, but also provides a wide array of speakers and lectures for residents and fundraisers for a number of local non-profits and scholarship programs. According to Club President Stefanie Jessiman, the Guilford Newcomers Club is a thriving social and civic group that was formed in 1973 and has attracted new members from all over the country and the world.
Jessiman said the group currently has 57 members, but it is growing fast and wants to reach out to the community for ideas and support.
“It is obvious that people are ready to socialize again after a difficult year due to COVID,” said Jessiman. “The Guilford Newcomers is not only for people new to town. It is open to all Guilford residents who are going through a life transition or simply want to expand their social circle. We encourage families, couples, singles, and empty-nesters to join. Everyone brings something unique to the club. Whatever the interest, there is something for everyone.”
According to Jessiman, the club serves an important purpose by providing a support system for new arrivals in Guilford, and also for other members to connect and find out what is happening around town.
“Adapting to a new town or state can be a daunting and lonely experience, especially during a pandemic. People often have no clue where to go, what to do, or how to meet people. Guilford is known for its warm and welcoming spirit and the club plays an important role in helping people become acclimated to our beautiful town, connect with others, and make lifelong friendships,” said Jessiman.
The club was forced to curtail its activities during the COVID restrictions, but is hopeful that the easing of those protocols will provide opportunities for the group once again.
“During the pandemic, we believed our mission was to help the community stay connected during a very stressful time. We remained in operation and continued holding meetings via Zoom or outdoors with masks and social distancing,” Jessiman said. “We did our best to keep the club moving forward. Last year, membership slowed slightly, but it has come roaring back in 2021. People are ready to get out and reconnect with one another.”
Like its sister club in Madison, the Guilford club also performs a number of civic and fundraising outreach for the community.
“We serve the community by holding three important annual fundraisers. In November and December, we support Guilford Social Services by providing Thanksgiving turkeys to Guilford families in need, and helping fulfill holiday wish lists for local children. In the spring, we provide summer camp scholarships for children,” said Jessiman.
