First Congregational Church hosted members of the other area churches, town and state officials, and residents at the United Nations International Day of Peace Celebration, which is held every Sept. 21 around the world.

For more than 15 years, the Congregational Church has organized the event to provide a moment of reflection on how individuals can effect a change for peace in their own lives.

Congregational Church Peace, Affirmation, and Justice Committee member Gini King said that the event is an important day for those striving for a more peaceful planet.

“This event is a great way to celebrate with those across the world who want peace in their neighborhoods, peace among nations, and peace in their lives, and this year more than ever peace in our country,” said King.

Benedictions were given, remarks were voiced and quotes of peace were read from Amelia Earhart to Bob Marley.

First Selectman Matt Hoey summed up the feelings of many with his comments: “It doesn’t cost anything to be kind,” he said.
