Mac’n’Cheese to Go—and for a Cause

Looking to support a good cause and eat a good meal at the same time? Head to the Old Saybrook Rotary Club’s curbside macaroni dinner at Fireman’s Field on Sunday, Oct. 17 from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

The dinner costs $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. Dinner consists of macaroni, meatball, sausage, salad, dessert, bread, and utensils. Patrons will arrive at Clark Memorial Field at 210 Elm Street and hand in their ticket. Their food will then be brought to their car. Tickets can be purchased from Rotary members or at Northeast Medical Products, 520 Boston Post Rd, Old Saybrook. Interested parties can also email johnaforismo@gmail.com.

Proceeds from the dinner will to several community programs such as scholarships, the DARE program, providing personal protective equipment for health care professionals, and gift cards to local restaurants for people who have been unemployed.

Rotary member John Aforismo said that the Rotary routinely holds events that aim to raise money for different causes. During a brainstorming session for new events last year, Aforismo told the other members that when he lived in Wethersfield, he was involved in an Italian organization that held an annual macaroni night that was a big hit. The other members liked the idea and the event was born.

“In old Saybrook the people are so generous in helping others,” said Aforismo.

Aforismo said that this marks the second straight year this event is being held. Aforismo estimated that 400 people were served in 2020, despite (or perhaps in part because of) the pandemic.

“We did this last year at the same time and it went very well,” said Aforismo.

According to the organization’s website, “The main objective of Rotary is service in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects to address needs in their local communities and in the international community. Additionally, they support programs for educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals.”

“The Rotary is incredible, we raise money and give it to people who need it,” said Aforismo. “We get requests from quite a few places and we do our best to help,” said Aforismo.
