An update issued by Branford Superintendent of Schools Hamlet Hernandez to school families on July 28 shares information on how the start of the school year will shape up when students go back to school; and what protocols the district will follow regarding COVID-19 prevention guidance, to date, based health department and CT State Department of Education (CSDE) recommendations. Branford Public Schools (BPS) will start the 2021-22 school year on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

Hernandez noted the information was being shared to help families prepare for the upcoming school year. According to the update, Branford schools plan to start the school year fully in-person. No option exists for voluntary remote instruction. Face coverings will be required of all BPS students and staff in school and on the bus. In school buildings, "every attempt" to provide 3 feet or more social distancing space between students will be made. Schools will use outdoor eating spaces as long as the weather is appropriate. Building ventilation systems will continue to be inspected and maintained; and building cleaning protocols will continue to be followed. Extracurricular activities "will begin either on time or with minimal delay/modification." Student-athletes will receive additional information about interscholastic sports. Families were also informed that "...more information about protocols for COVID+ cases will be provided later this summer."

Periodic updates will be provided and posted at the BPS website https://www.branford.k12.ct.us , where the Superintendent's Update is also posted.

In the update's opening remarks, Hernandez encouraged families to familiarize themselves with the latest version (July 25, 2021) of the Connecticut Department of Health (DPH) and CSDE joint- issued " Interim Recommendations for COVID-19 Prevention in Connecticut's PreK-12 Schools" and shared a link to the online version.

"We expect further guidance from the State in the next few weeks and will continue to share information about what you can expect for your child this fall.  We are committed to providing a safe and positive learning experience for all students," Hernandez noted in his update.

In closing, Hernandez made note of the following things families can do: follow the rules, set the example; if eligible, get vaccinated; wash your hands regularly; if unvaccinated, avoid indoor congregate settings; do not send your children to school if they are symptomatic; have a plan in case your child is required to isolate or quarantine.
