06/22/2021 02:23 PMAt a special Board of Selectmen (BOS) meeting on June 16, the BOS unanimously voted to direct Hibbard and Rosa Architects, LLC, to come up with plans to fix the roof of the Mulvey Center. The report is expected back in 30 days.
The Teresa Mulvey Municipal building is a center of civic life in Westbrook, but the building itself may soon be in for a major overhaul. First Selectman Noel Bishop said that the roof of the building has been “an ongoing issue for several years.”
Bishop explained the big issue is with the shingles on the building, which weren’t installed properly several years ago.
“It’s not going to be cheap to fix it, but we don’t have a cost estimate yet,” Bishop said.
At a joint meeting between the BOS and the Board of Finance on June 16, the members received a presentation from architect Thomas Hibbard covering the current condition of the roof and possible solutions to fix the problems.
The BOS unanimously passed a motion to ask the architects to a do preliminary roof design with estimates for different materials and designs for the roof. The report is due back to the BOF in 30 days.
“This is a major issue to the town and has been for some time,” Bishop said to the Harbor News.
Bishop said that while the architect’s report noted that the building is structurally sound, it was still recommended the roof be replaced.
“It was a very thorough and comprehensive report,” Bishop said.
An estimate will be included in the architect’s final report to the BOS next month.
Bishop said that the roof issue had been included in budget discussions and money has been put in the capital plans for the roof work. Bishop said the town would put out a request for proposal on the project and go out to bid to find people to complete the work.
“This is a significant project for the town and a big cost, but a new roof should last for three decades,” said Bishop.
