Branford Main Street Reconstruction Project to Begin; Spring 2022 Construction Start Anticipated

Abandoned trolley tracks, utility cuts, age, and local drainage issues (seen here) have led to the increasing deterioration of Branford's Main Street, requiring a full-depth reconstruction. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2022 and finish by winter 2022. The Town of Branford, through the Town Engineer’s Office, has begun the process of designing improvements to Main Street. Abandoned trolley tracks, utility cuts, age, and local drainage issues have led to the increasing deterioration of Main Street, requiring a full-depth reconstruction. The construction will occur from South Main Street (Rte. 146) to just past Chestnut Street within the existing roadway width (from curb to curb not including the sidewalks). However, enhanced accessibility and other improvements to the sidewalks and crosswalks will be updated where necessary.

The Town has been working with the Regional Water Authority and Southern CT Gas Company to replace existing infrastructure prior to the roadway reconstruction. This coordination will reduce the need for utility cuts in the future and ensure the longevity of the Town’s efforts to rehabilitate the roadway.

Preliminary design for the reconstruction is in the beginning stages and final design drafts are anticipated by the end of 2021. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2022 and finish by winter 2022. There will be several opportunities for residents, business owners, and those interested to review draft designs and provide additional feedback in the upcoming months. Periodically the Town’s webpage will be updated with latest ways to get involved. In the immediate term, please consider taking an online survey to assist in guiding the initial design phases, share your thoughts and to sign up for email updates. The survey will be open until July 9, 2021.  An open house has been scheduled for July 22, 2021 on the Town Green from 4:30-6:30 p.m. RSVPS are encouraged, but not required. The Town Green live music series will also be taking place that night starting at 6 p.m. A perfect opportunity for a family outing!
